Donald “Doc” Shuffield   lead vocal / percussion

'Doc' as he is known to music lovers through out
the Lone Star state, wears many hats in the band
and on the new recording. He is a very soulful
Texas born and raised 'sanger', on top of being
able to shake or slap a beat out of just about
anything! Doc is the icing on the Crash Landing
cake.
Doc has been involved with music his whole life.
Influenced by his dad, Duck Shuffield, who led
country bands across central Texas with his
distinctive vocal and guitar-playing styles
throughout Doc’s youth. Doc played and excelled
at the trombone throughout his Jr. High to college
years. He began playing in Rock bands in 1976,
primarily as a percussionist/back-up vocalist and
has rocked dancing feet across roadhouse floors
for past thirty years. He is clearly a high-caliber
seasoned veteran of the central Texas music
scene.
On the new recording Doc takes the lead vocals
on all the songs and flavors each tune with just
the right ingredients to round out the sound...
from spicy Tex-Mex congas and shakers to
heavenly chimes, cheery tamborines,  and all the
way over to greasy BBQ rockin’ cow bell!
As a songwriter, he has penned some of the
band’s most memorable tunes, and did I already
mention he wails on the tromboney-phone too?
"Everything is percussion, so grab a couple of
sticks and make some music!"…Doc

Kirby Sodek           drums

Any one who has ever seen Kirby play walks
away from the  experience knowing the bar has
just been raised a notch for the next guy!
Sodek carries on a family tradition of drumming
and cites his father as his main inspiration as
Kirby takes his place as king of the drum throne.
Getting his first kit at the age of three, it didn’t
take long for those around him to notice he was a
natural talent. Before long he was accompanying
his old man to gigs and sitting in with the old pros.
Seeing and meeting great drum masters like...
Buddy Rich, Louie Belson, & Gene Krupa further
inspired the young Sodek to pursue his talents
behind the kit, but after witnessing the double
drum jams of Butch Trucks /Jaimoe via the
Allman Brothers Band, Kirby pushed even further
to advance his own 'double drummer' style of
playing.
After performing one night Kirby was noticed by
the master of nicknames Cutter Brandenburg
(former Road mgr. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double
Trouble, Andy Gibb, JoJo Gunne, Ian Hunter)
Brandenburg had dubbed Double Trouble
drummer Chris Layton as 'The Whipper' many
years before, and now declared Sodek as 'The
BIG Whipper', a title he defends nightly.
Kirby has shared the stage with many of the best
players in the  music world. Former Jimi Hendrix
drummer Buddy Miles ,after  watching Sodek do
his set (on Buddy's drums) declared outloud
"Kirby you a bad mutha-fuckah, aint you?" In his
typical manner 'Whip just shrugged and said "I
guess so, if you say so Mr. Miles". We all say so
Kirby....

Rob Turnpaugh    Bass

Rob's nickname says it all... 'Basshead' as he is
known to his friends, is an understatement more
than a description. Turnpaugh has never strayed
from his instrument of choice... the 4 string bass.
What started out as a fun way for a ten year old
to hang out with his older brothers, has evolved
into a lifelong passion for making music,
specifically the low down end of it!
As co-founder of Crash Landing, Rob has
provided the bass lines for brother Rick to play
off of since the two were kids. Always an eager
student of anything bass, Turnpaugh has studied
every player he has had the opportunity to know,
from his first lessons the Reed brothers gave him
as a youngster, to the more advanced playing
tips shared with him by bass pros like Chuck
Rainey, Mark Andes, and Tommy Shannon.
Rob's distinct traditional bass sound comes from
playing his 1966 Fender P-bass through a
classic Ampeg SVT bass rig. His HUGE bass
sound comes via a custom-made Gibson
Thunderbird bass, an instrument he used
exclusively on the new Crash Landing recording.
He shuns using a pick or any electronic gadgets,
that’s just not the 'Basshead' way, opting instead
to pick out every note with fingers that God
designed to play bass !
Turnpaugh cites bass greats Paul McCartney,
John Paul Jones, Jack Bruce, Geddy Lee, Noel
Redding, Billy Cox, Tommy Shannon, as clear
influences in the development of his own playing
style, and cites drummers 'Uncle' John Turner,
Buddy Miles, Johnny Barbata,  'Frosty' Smith,
and Kirby Sodek as the best he's played with.
Aside from playing bass Rob has also put
together a very impressive collection of the 4
string instruments... and a couple 5 stringers as
well. Of particular importance are a pair of 1966
Fender basses.. one 4 string and a matching 5
string. "Unlike bagpipes... one can never own to
many basses!"... Basshead

Rick Vail      guitar / vocals

Rick began playing guitar the day Jimi Hendrix
died, coincidentally it was Vail’s birthday. From
the start he knew one thing was certain, he was
born to rock! After years of touring and playing
out on the road Rick eventually settled in central
Texas  playing local gigs and spinning records
for local FM rock radio stations in the area. In the
early 1990's he joined forces with Chainsaw and
a guitar team was formed that blows away
audiences still today. Fat chunky rhythms,
blazing leads, greasy slide work, and making the
guitar talk are all Rick Vail trademarks.
Rick is a very accomplished guitar player with lots
of influences to draw from. Early influences are
the same as everyone else... Beatles, Beck,
Page, Clapton, Allman, Townsend, Hendrix and
the likes. However, he couldn’t stop there and
draws equally from the heavy Euro-guitar styles
of  Michael Schenker, Gary Moore, Ritchie
Blackmore, and  Yngwie Malmsteen.
When it comes to his instruments Vail prefers
modern guitars and digital modeling amps to the
vintage instruments he relied on for so many
years. He still uses a few 'oldies' here and there,
but is much more comfortable using modern
wammy bar devices. He is an advocate of digital
processing technology and can truly pull some
amazing sounds from his Line 6 amps. In contrast
to Turnpaugh's straight  tube amp tone, Vail's
tones are much more sophisticated and polished
with his mastery over guitar effects.
He has penned some of Crash Landings most
popular songs and continues to be a driving
force in the band and on the recent Crash
Landing recording. " All knobs to 11 "... Rick Vail

Rick Turnpaugh  Guitars / vocals

'Chainsaw', as he was dubbed by Texas blues
great Alan Haynes, after a chainsaw accident
came close to costing him one of his guitar
strokin fingers, has been performing, producing,
& promoting, live music concerts in the central
Texas area for the last  three decades.
As the founder of Crash Landing, Rick has led
the band through well over a thousand
roadhouse, club, festival, and concert
performances.
As a guitarist 'chainsaw' prefers vintage Gibson &
Fender guitars, played loudly through Marshall ,
Fender, and Kendrick amps, to nail down his
no-frills Texas 'bone-tone'. He plays a variety of
acoustic stringed instruments as well. His style
can easily be described as blues-based rock &
roll, although he is quite capable of playing
outside of that box when called upon to do so.
Chainsaw prefers a  bare guitar tone and, for the
most part, uses no special effects, tricks or
gadgets other than whipping out an occasional
coricidan bottle here & there.
Early guitar influences were Les Paul, Chuck
Berry, BB King, the Beatles, Page, Clapton,
Beck, the Ventures, Johnny Winter, Rick
Derringer, anything Elvis, Sun, Motown, Stax, and
of course Jimi Hendrix. Mix that with some Duane
Allman slide, Lynyrd Skynyrd style riffing, and a
heavy dose of Stevie Ray Vaughan fueled Albert
King licks ... and  "aye yi yi"... you have the
recipe for some big Tejas BBQ tone!  An
unpredictable player and song writer, Turnpaugh
is very fond of jamming and improvising off the
cuff. He has shared the stage with many of his
own musical heroes, and feels he has learned
something from each and every one of them. You
can often be surprised at who you may see on
stage jamming with Chainsaw and the band.
As a songwriter Rick has penned some of Crash
Landing's most popular songs, and has more
than a few new tunes to introduce to his
audiences in the near future. "The mind is a
terrible thing to waste on things like mathematics
and politics... write a song, it will make you feel
better and you just might get lucky and touch
someone else's soul as well!" ... Chainsaw.
